Seaquel Wetsuits
15G Porana Road, Glenfield (09 443 2771)A New Zealand owned and operated wetsuit manufacturer since 1989. They make great quality two-piece, semidry, and spearfishing wetsuits; if you go on a club trip look around, loads of us have Seaquel wetsuits.
They also manufacture wetsuits for the New Zealand and French Navy divers, New Zealand coastguard, water heated 10mm thick suits for oil-rig divers, and other big orders, I forget where from… so they must be good right?
Also a good place to take your suit for repair or modification (such as pockets).
Show your membership card, and student ID for a 10% discount on new wetsuits (including custom suits), there is no discount on repair or alterations.
Fish on Film
Golflands, near Botany Downs (09 535 5439 or 021 780 064 to book)This guy rents out underwater cameras, underwater video cameras, and strobes!
Show your membership card, and get access to the dive club regular customers discount! The discount is a minimum of 10%, and is growing as club members go more often! Short term hires of 1-2 days will eventually attract an up to 45% discount. Longer hires have a maximum discount of 25%.
Check here for prices, you can rent out a still camera for as low as $30 a day before the discount; this place can’t be beat for a great deal.
You will have to put down a $500 bond before renting, these cameras are expensive. Credit card is easiest, but call to inquire about other options. An imprint of your credit card (visa or mastercard) is taken and kept until the rig is returned. He doesn’t charge or pre-authorise the $500 through to the card, so the card account is unaffected.
There are multiple options for cameras, from beginner to more advanced. We can vouch for the Sony P150 for being super easy to use, with great quality photos, but we’re sure the others are good too.
Before you take it away for the first time he spends about 20 minutes with you, explaining how the camera works, how to ensure it does not leak, and tips for taking great photos. So this is a great way to try out underwater photography on a low low budget.
He also sells specialist photography gear (not so much point and shoot cameras and housings) such as strobes, wet lens adapters, dSLR housings, video housings and video lights so definitely worth asking for a quote before your next purchase.
