Muck diving is a term used to denote diving on barren bottoms or places other than on coral reefs. It also usually means you are looking for small marine animals. Diving under Leigh Jetty definitely qualifies as muck diving. It's also loads of fun. You can see Octopuses, Seahorses, Pipefishes and loads of other macro life. Give it a try. Photos by Ali Perkins. I dived the wreck of the SS Wairarapa with Goat Island Dive. The sinking of the ship resulted in the third greatest loss of life in New Zealand waters. Bound for Auckland from Sydney, the ship ran onto rocks at Great Barrier Island on 29 October 1894. 101 of the 186 passengers and 20 of the crew of 65 died. Over the decades the wreck collapsed into pieces due to the strong current. The parts lie scattered in a bay near Miners Head in a depth of around 12-20 metres. (Posted by Mirko Tegeler.) Staying with Northland Dive at the Cowshed Backpackers we dived the wreck of the ex-HMNZS Canterbury. The Canterbury is a 113m frigate which was scuttled in Deep Water Cove on 03 November 2007 to make an artificial reef for fish and a playground for recreational divers. The wreck is sitting on the sand in an upright position in a depth of about 36m. Deep Water Cove, Bay of Islands, New Zealand 46 photos |

Freshers Weekend at Goat Island - the oldest Marine Reserve in New Zealand. Heavy swell made the shore dives a bit rough; but still good fun with heaps of Snapper and an Eagle Ray. Taking pictures was hard though with average visibility less than 1.5m

Ceratosoma amoena or Clown nudibranchs (pronounced nudibranks) are common in northern areas. Their cream bodies are patterned with orange blotches while the rhinophores (tentacles) and gill plume are purple. These beautiful invertebrates add a tiny splash of brilliant colour to the scenery. Look out for them! If you don't want to be inundated with nothing but photographs of nudibranchs in 2008, get out diving and take some snaps of your own to upload to the website. It is lying on its starboard side at depths ranging from 25 to 30 metres. 155 metres in length, it is one of the biggest diveable wrecks in the world.
