Club Gear

We own 5 full sets of dive gear and plenty of wetsuits and fins. These are hired out to our members at the below rates. Gear is available all year round except that people on club dive trips get priority. Please respect club gear and treat it as if it were very expensive (which it is) and belonged to you. We want the gear to last a long time and remain in good condition.

Members can hire gear by emailing Hannah on gear@akunidive.com. The more advance notice you can give of wanting to hire gear the more chance you will have of arranging a convenient collection time. All gear hire is bound by the rules stated below.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Auckland University Students Association, the latest addition to the club’s hire gear are our Aladin ONE computers. Easy access to information is the key feature of the Aladin ONE computer. The Aladin ONE large round display shows all fundamental information at once, for the ease of use. The maximum depth and the temperature alternate every 4 seconds, while current depth, dive time, no-stop or alternatively deco stop information is always displayed. For maximum convenience, the 3 minute timer activates automatically upon reaching 5 metres.

Gear Hire Rules

We take a $50 cash deposit which will be returned to you in full if all the hired gear is returned on time, properly rinsed and undamaged.

You will be held responsible for loss or damage to gear that is caused by carelessness or misuse.

Gear pick-up / return times should be arranged with Hannah (gear@akunidive.com). The more advance notice you can give of wanting to hire gear the more chance you will have of arranging a convenient collection time. Hannah may wait 15 minutes beyond the arranged time, then leave. Hannah is a volunteer and her time is valuable. Please respect that.

We can only hire out the gear that the club owns. If we can’t hire you a complete set of gear, you will have to arrange to hire additional items yourself. We recommend you contact your local dive shop (http://akunidive.com/shops-gear-hire/). Alternatively, you could try and borrow gear off your mates.

People going on club trips have priority for gear hire.

To hire gear each person hiring MUST have:

  • AUUC membership card.
  • Exact change + $50 cash deposit.

Washing Gear

All gear MUST BE WASHED in fresh water after each day of diving, before it is returned. This means a proper wash. Washing details are as follows:

1. REGS: do not hose regulators down as this can force sand and dirt inside. Put them in a bucket of fresh water and swoosh them around for a few minutes. Make sure the dust cap is on to protect the inlet valve from water!!

2. BCD’s: can be hosed or dipped in water. The interior MUST be rinsed out with fresh water. To do this, push the manual inflate button, insert hose, fill with water. Swoosh around water inside the BCD for a few minutes. Then blow some air in manually, turn upside down and squeeze out ALL the water. This takes a while.

3. WETSUITS: can be hosed or dipped in water. If you pee’d in your wetsuit, and we really hope you didn’t, then you should soak it in fresh water with a wetsuit shampoo. Do not dry in the sun.

4. TANKS: follow ‘Taking Care of the Club Tanks’ protocols as detailed below.

5. FINS & BOOTIES: can be hosed or dipped in water.

Take Care of Gear

This means store tanks, BCD’s, regs, wetsuits, fins and booties out of the sun and out of the sand. Make sure the regulator and octopus are never in the sand. Wash them all well; don’t put weight belts or heavy stuff on top of the gear. Do not drain your tank. If gear is returned damaged or is lost, hiring privileges may be revoked and you may be charged the costs of repair or replacement. Take care of gear; the better you care for it, the longer club members can enjoy it!

Report Malfunctioning Gear

If you believe any club gear you hire is not functioning properly, let Hannah know all the details when you return it so we can have it fixed.

Club Tanks

The club has five aluminium tanks which members can hire out for club trips. Tank hire costs $5 and you MUST return the tank clean (washed down with fresh water) and filled with air. Failure to do this will result in a $20 fine.

Taking Care of the Club Tanks

Please take the following steps to care for the club tanks:

1. Don’t store tanks in high temperatures (eg. in the back of your car in hot weather).

2. Pack tanks for transport so they don’t move around and bang into each other, or into other things.

3. Never empty the tanks (by breathing them dry or otherwise). Leaving a tank unpressurised can allow water inside which will rust the tanks. Always aim to be back on the boat with 50 bar in your tank.

4. Protect the tank valve. Don’t let it bang into things when moving tanks. Always lay tanks down so they can’t fall over and be damaged. Carry tanks by gripping the entire valve, not just the handwheel.

5. Thoroughly rinse the tanks and valves with fresh water after diving.

6. Fill the tanks with air from a reputable source (eg. local dive shop). No dodgy backyard fills please!
