NEXT WEEK’S CLUB MEETING – Deep Wreck Adventures by Dr Simon Mitchell
Dr Mitchell is a world renowned technical diver. He began diving in 1972. His diving primarily involves the use of rebreather technology to explore shipwrecks at extreme depths. Simon is an anaesthesiologist and diving physician. He has devoted much of his career to diving medicine and has treated more than 400 cases of decompression illness. He recently co-authored the second edition of “Deeper into Diving” with John Lippmann and co-authored 2 chapters on decompression illness in the most recent edition of Bennett and Elliott. He is a previous Vice President of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Society (UHMS), and Chairman of the Society’s Diving Committee.

We are very privileged to have Simon talk to us. He is an entertaining and enlightening speaker. He is regularly flown to dive conferences around the world to speak to audiences who have paid a lot to be there. Next week you can hear him for free. Simon is such a great speaker that even non-divers will be entertained by what he has to say… bring your mates along. As with all our meetings, you don’t need to be a member to come along – the more the merrier!

Our premiere screening of this Dutch documentary marks the 25th anniversary of the sinking in Auckland harbour by French government agents of the Greenpeace flagship, the Rainbow Warrior. Six members of the original Rainbow Warrior crew eventually settled on Waiheke Island, a location revealed through the lens of filmmaker Suzanne Raes as nothing short of paradise. She films them as they go about their daily lives and investigates the inextricable connections between their life choices and political action. They recount their role in moving 320 Marshall Islanders ravaged by fall-out from US nuclear tests in 1979. They talk of their innocent sense of adventure which shattered when colleague Fernando Pereira died on board the Warrior, a victim of the French action. They reflect on past campaigns and the changing nature of activism. We’re delighted to provide the homecoming venue for this international spotlight on their activism and to join them in commemorating a defining moment in the New Zealand’s anti-nuclear stance. — BG

SODS (Southern Ocean Diving Society) are putting together a trip to dive the wreck of the Mikhail Lermontov in 2010. Their last trip to see this beauty was a total success so here it is again – for all wreck lovers – this is the ultimate wreck.

You could get in some practice dives on the Canterbury.

Nearly 800ft long, in less than 40 metres water, she surely is one of the best, if not THE best wreck dive in the southern hemisphere.

The trip is tentatively planned for either July or November, this will depend on how they get the required numbers. The trip is open to all divers, however minimum of Advanced Open Water is recommended. Nitrox will be available. Trimix will be available as well – however only to CCR rebreathers.

Wreck penetration cannot be recommended without a redundant air source and advanced wreck training or similar. Therefore single tank divers will be limited to small penetrations and the outside of the ship. They will have plenty of guides on the trip (Brend, Christian and probably one more), so that even on a single there will be some nice stuff to see in the easier parts of the wreck, just the deep penetrations will be restricted for diver safety. If you are on CCR or twins you can go for it.

Number of divers will be limited to nine. 5 spaces are already filled, so there are 4 spaces left at the moment.

Costs for 5 days diving including accommodation and all airfills, but excluding O2 for nitrox and He/O2 for trimix will be around $950 departing Picton (top of the South Island). Final price to be confirmed when they have numbers as this is a non-profit trip.

Contact Christian on email cblaschke@z-systems.co.nz.
Or see the SODS website.

Screening at the Civic in Auckland on Tuesday 14th July, 6:15pm as part of the New Zealand International Film Festival. This movie is a MUST SEE. Buy tickets here.

Winner of the Audience Award at both the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and 2009 Hot Docs festival, The Cove follows a team of activists and filmmakers as they infiltrate a heavily-guarded cove in Taiji, Japan. In this remote village they witness and document activities deliberately being hidden from the public: More than 20,000 dolphins and porpoises are being slaughtered each year and their meat, containing toxic levels of mercury, is being sold as food in Japan, often times labeled as whale meat.

The majority of the world is not aware this is happening. The Taiji cove is blocked off from the public. Cameras are not allowed inside and the media does not cover the story. It’s critical that we get the word out in Japan. It’s critical that we get the word out—everywhere. We believe that once the Japanese people know, they will demand change.

“Dolphins are the only wild animals known to rescue humans. With this film, we’d like to come to their rescue and, in the process, save ourselves.” — Louie Psihoyos, Japan Times

Director: Louie Psihoyos
Year: 2008
Running time: 94 mins

As gripping as a D-day assault movie, this spectacular film from National Geographic photographer Louie Psihoyos surely spells the end of business for a business few of us even suspected existed: the capture of dolphins to populate the world’s dolphinariums. The grotesque by-product of this already questionable trade is that surplus dolphins are slaughtered and passed off as whale meat in the supermarkets of Japan. The film follows US conservation group Oceanic Preservation Society – equipped and financed to the tune of $5 million by Netscape founder Jim Clark – as it penetrates the massive wall of security around the operation in order to capture the footage that should blow this operation out of the water. Former Flipper trainer Ric O’Barry, painfully aware of the role that TV series had in popularising performing dolphin shows, is an eloquent and moving exponent of dolphin rights and a clued-up commentator on the intransigence of the Japanese and the ineffectiveness of the International Whaling Commission.
