Shark finning – cutting off the high-priced fins of sharks and dumping the rest of the body at sea – is contributing to the decline of shark species worldwide. While the practice is illegal in many countries, it is still permitted in New Zealand waters.

The scallop season for the Auckland and Kermadec Fishery Management Area (includes Northland, Waikato and the Bay of Plenty) opens on 1 September 2008. The open season is 1 September to 31 March inclusive.
For scallops, measure the greatest diameter of the shell. Minimum size 100mm.
Daily limit of 20 per person.

MFish and NIWA are offering postgraduate scholarships in quantitative fisheries science worth up to $90,000 each.
MFish Chief Scientist Pamela Mace said the scholarships were available to PhD students at $30,000 per annum for up to three years, and to Masters students at up to $25,000 per annum for up to two years.
